Abstract
The paper aims at investigating the material and symbolic functions of statal walls in the global age. In the first part of the paper, we
show the contradictory nature of globalization; in the second part, we analyze statal walls as a spectacularization of statal sovereignty; in the third part, we claim that statal walls produce a problematic process of subjectivation; in the fourth part, we argue that walls are a dialectic overthrow of borders; in the last part, we show how the politics of fortification invade contemporary cities. In the end, we suggest that contemporary fortification trend can be understood as a symptom of a global paranoia.
