LAIC, MERITOCRATIC, LONGEVAL, HUGE BUT WELL-ORDERED AND PROSPEROUS: CHINA CARTOGRAPHED BY MARTINI (1655) AS A THEORETICAL PARADIGM AND PRACTICAL EXAMPLE FOR WESTERN INTELLECTUALS
In the middle of the 17th century, Martino Martini was the first author publishing a complete description of China, obtained from native sources. China is represented laic, meritocratic, longeval, well-ordered, huge, prosperous and mapped. The paper analyzes how, through Martini’s geographic maps and detailed geographical descriptions, China provides Western intellectuals with an example of what size it can become an Empire, if organized rationally.
