The architect Carlo Mollino (1905-1973) often alluded to the concept of Einfühlung [empathy] and the aesthetics of pure visibility, especially in Vedere l’architettura [Seeing architecture, 1946]. As he wrote, «the fundamental element of all these theories and those like them is the assertion that our senses are endowed with innate preferences towards certain external stimuli». As it were, this is resonance, something he put into practice in his works, something that is empathic compared to the works of some of his contemporaries. Resonance is what he looked for, what he tried out in various ways and contexts. To understand these, neo-aesthetics, new philosophy, and the aesthetic approach discussed in Paola Gregory’s latest book (based on the neurosciences and the rediscovery of empathy) can help us find our way. This essay sheds light on the origin of Mollino’s desire to seek out aesthetic emotions through several references that have not yet emerged in the historiography dedicated to him – the texts and works of Erich Mendelsohn as well as his project for Dancing Lutrario in Turin. Even now, this nightclub keeps on touching people’s feelings, as a series of interviews with some of its present-day habitués reveals.
